Event Details

Hello to my favorite cooks! Hope you're staying warm in your kitchens. The next Cooks and Books gathering at the Library will be on Tuesday, March 24 at 6:30PM. The theme of the evening will be "Fictitious Dishes." Find a work of fiction that describes a meal or a particular dish being eaten by one or more of the book's characters. Recreate a dish from that scene to bring to our meeting. Please bring the book you used for inspiration and plan to share the scene with the group.

For example, on page 29 of Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, Kya is hungry and enters the school cafeteria. " Copying the others, she picked up a tray, a green plastic plate, and flatware. A large window with a counter opened into the kitchen, and laid out before her was an enormous enamel pan of chicken pie crisscrossed with thick, crispy pastry, hot gravy bubbling up. A tall black woman, smiling and calling some of the kids by name, plopped a big helping of pie on her plate, then some pink-lady peas in butter and a yeast roll. She got banana pudding and her own small red-and-white carton of milk to put on her tray."  If I were using this book for Cooks and Books I'd make a chicken pie to share.

If you have any questions or need a suggestion for a book, please reach out to me at (717)580-6615 or lmichels@yorklibraries.org.

Looking forward to seeing you (and tasting your fictitious dishes!) on March 24.
