Event Details
“How to write a Life: A Writing Workshop” is a three-part program that will teach you how to “write a life" in short form, whether that is an obituary honoring someone who has already passed, a celebratory message for someone who is still with us, or an encapsulation of what your life means.
November 1: A Legacy in Letters
With the holidays coming up, what better gift than the gift of a living eulogy--a letter of gratitude for another (still living) family member, author, teacher etc. Paper and cards provided, or bring your own!
December 6: We Are Our Local History
Dr. Anthony D. Fredericks--many know him as Tony--will guest teach a session on passing down family history. Write about your life and those you love as a way to pass the stories on to your family, your town, or beyond.
January 3: Celebrations of Life
Learn how other cultures from your own celebrate a life well-lived, then spend time working on tributes, whether that is delving into an in-depth story of a life or writing an out-of-the-box obituary.
More details
You will get the most from the workshop if you plan to attend all three, but you can also learn something from only attending one or two. Registration is listed as required, but walk-ins are also welcome!
Each session will begin with an introductory lesson on the writing craft, provide time to write, and end with sharing your writing (at your comfort level) and realizations with your fellow participants.
At the end of the workshop, participants will have the choice to display their “life celebration” written pieces in an exhibit in Martin Library’s atrium.
The workshops are taught by local author Nicole Watt.
