Program Description
Event Details
Meet scientist, Sierra Miller, learn about her work as a bioinformaticist, and do a hands-on strawberry DNA isolation procedure.
What's a bioinformaticist?
Sierra will talk about her career as a scientist with the federal government in the genome editing program at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. She will explain how she uses computer code to read DNA, interpret it, and visualize it so we can understand what it means.
Maybe you would like to be a scientist some day, too? You'll have a chance to ask questions and learn from someone who is passionate about STEM outreach to young people.
What's a strawberry DNA isolation procedure?
We will start with a few strawberries. Then we will use common household supplies to isolate and extract DNA from the cells of the strawberries. Finally, we will make observation notes about the appearance and texture of the DNA we collect.
Ages 8 and up (younger kids welcome with a parent or partner to help them)
We have supplies for 20 participants. Please register using the section below to reserve your supplies.
